Pet Liability Insurances
Pet Health Insurance

As a pet owner, you are responsible for damages caused by your pet. Liability insurance will provide coverage if your pet causes injuries, property damages, or other financial costs brought on by your animal’s accident. The scope of coverage depends on the type of liability insurance you choose. Dog owners will need to pull out dog liability insurance or Hundehaftpflicht. The state you live in will determine if dog liability insurance is compulsory. Some states require it for all dogs, some states require it for dogs deemed as aggressive, and others only recommend it. The Bund Der Versicherten (The Federation of Insureds) also recommends pulling out liability insurance for horses, this insurance is known as Pferdeversicherungen. For cats or other small animals you don’t need to pull out insurance specifically for this pet, private liability insurance typically covers these animals. Check out our private liability page for details on how you and your small animal can acquire liability insurance. If your animals are considered dangerous like a snake or a lizard, you can obtain an exotic animal liability insurance which is typically called Exotische Tierhalter-Haftpflichtversicherung.

If you are looking for pet health care coverage there are many options available. In most cases, insurance companies offer different pricing tiers with different types of coverage. For example, if you would like to have coverage in case your pet needs surgery then you can opt for an insurance that only covers surgery costs, this is called Tierkrankenversicherung (OT). The typical health care plans are offered to both dogs and cats. In german, dog health insurance is called Hundekrankenversicherung while cat health insurance is called Katzekrankenversicherung. We’ve rounded up a few health care offers that are worth looking into.

Pet Liability Insurance:

As a pet owner in Germany, you are responsible for any damages caused by your animal. This is stated in § 833 BGB (German Civil Code). Pet liability insurance can help protect you if your pet causes injuries, property damage, or breakage of items. This Insurance may also cover legal fees and financial loss incurred by a pet’s accident.

When it comes to pet liability insurance, it is recommended to obtain this insurance for dogs and horses. The Bund Der Versicherten (The Federation of Insureds) recommends that the sum insured should at least be a flat rate of 5 million euros for property damage and personal injury.

Dog Liability Insurance:

Dog liability insurance (Hundehaftpflichtversicherung) is compulsory for all dogs in some states, compulsory for certain breeds that are considered “dangerous” in some states, and in others, it is only recommended for all dogs. Comprehensive coverage for a dog will cost between 50 and 80 euros.

Horse Liability Insurance:

The Bund Der Versicherten recommends Horse liability insurance (Pferdeversicherungen) especially given their size and strength of horses. Comprehensive coverage for a horse will cost between 100 and 150 euros.

Liability Insurance for cats and other small animals:

Cats and other small animals are typically covered under your own private liability insurance. Keep in mind that both pet liability insurances and private liability insurances do not cover the damage any animal causes to the owner and the owner’s personal property.

Pet Health Insurance:

Pet health insurance is not compulsory, but it will give you peace of mind. There are two types of pet health insurances that are typically offered – pet health insurance and surgery cost insurance.

Cat and Dog Health Insurance:

Pet health insurances cover various types of veterinarian bills and expenses related to surgery. The amount of coverage you receive varies depending on the insurance company and the package you choose. The cost will also differ depending on the type of animal, the breed, the animal age, and the health history of your animal. To apply for pet health insurance, your pet must be older than eight weeks and younger than four years old.

Pet Surgery Cost Insurance

Since pet health insurances are pricy in comparison to vet costs, you can also choose a plan that will only cover the cost of surgery. Pet surgery cost insurance will only cover cost relating to surgery – which can be the most expensive unexpected medical cost for an animal.

Why should you get a home contents insurance (Hausratversicherung) in Germany?

If you have any personal belongings in your house that you don’t want to be stolen or damaged you need a home contents insurance. In simple terms: Imagine your house or flat without a roof and turned upside down. Anything that would fall out is your „Hausrat“ (home contents). If it is lost or damaged by fire, water, theft, burglary, or vandalism, the costs for replacement or repair are covered by this insurance.

TV, computer, mobile phone, tablet, laptop, all other electrical devices, clothes, jewellery, furniture, books, carpets, musical instruments, jewellery etc. are insured in the event of damage or theft. The place connected to this insurance is your home including balcony, garage or terrace where most of your personal belongings are usually kept. (Please note: The car or motor bike in your garage is not insured. This requires a car insurance or a motorbike insurance respectively.)

But even outside your home your personal belongings are insured when you travel and take them with you (AuĂźenversicherung).

For example, if there was a break-in in your hotel room and your notebook and Apple watch were stolen, the insurance will cover the replacement costs. It goes without saying: Any damage or loss through your own gross negligence (grobe Fahrlässigkeit), say, you leave your notebook in the bar – is of course not covered.

Which insurance sum (Deckungssumme) should be chosen?

In general the insurance sum depends on the value of the goods insured. This sum (Deckungssumme) is the maximum sum paid by the insurance in the event of loss or damage.

There are two ways to calculate this sum:

  1. a flat rate charging a certain sum according to the size of you flat or house, for example 500 Euro per square meter. If you live in a flat with 50 sqm of living space, you should insure a sum of 25,000 Euro in order not to be underinsured. This way of calculation is the common one, it’s simple and requires little effort.
  2. an individual rate according to the detailed value of you belongings. In this case you make a list of all your belongings and sum up their values. This effort could be worth taking when you live in a spacious flat but have comparatively few belongings of value. Then you would be overinsured and pay more than necessary if you choose the flat rate.

How much does a home contents insurance cost?

The rates vary a lot between insurance companies, but you get an insurance sum of 200.000 Euro from approx. 50-60 Euro a year. Many insurance companies offer a reduced rate for deductibles (Selbstbeteiligung). That means you pay a small amount of the damage (say, up to 200 Euro), and the insurance covers the rest.

The contract period is usually one year and will be automatically extended if you don’t give notice. Further discounts are granted if longer contract periods are concluded. Depending on the area where you live extended coverage of damages through over-voltage damage, flooding, avalanches, landslides can be included at – usually small – additional rates (Elementarschädenversicherung).

Bicycles are usually not covered and must be co-insured. Here, insurance conditions also vary.

We recommend to check different insurances and compare their rates according to your needs.
