Revolut offers a free VISA credit card, which is a prepaid credit card. You transfer money to the Revolut account, either via bank account or another credit card. It is free and no annual fees are charged. Registering for all Revolut cards is easily possible within the Revolut app and only takes a couple of minutes. Simply provide your personal details and take a photo of your ID. You will immediately be able to use the app, while your identification is checked in the background.
The standard package is free and gives you a physical VISA card, which is shipped to your address, as well as a virtual credit card that you can use for online shopping for example.
If you prefer a Mastercard, you need to select one of the paid plans called “Premium” or “Metal”. Then you can also use your Revolut card for Google Pay, because only Revolut Mastercards are eligible for that service.
This makes it a great card for traveling, as the exchange rates are low. During the week (Mon-Fri), no markup fees are applied on all major currencies except for Thai Baht, Russian Rubbles, and Ukrainian Hryvnia where Revolut adds a 1% markup, and a small 0.5% fee for anything above €6,000 each month. During the weekend (Sat-Sun), Revolut applies small markups to the last exchange rate: +0.5% to all major currencies (ie. USD, GBP, EUR, AUD, CAD, NZD, CHF, JPY, SEK, HKD, NOK, SGD, DKK, PLN, and CZK); and
+1% to all other currencies including THB, RUB, UAH and TRY. (this means over the weekend THB, RUB, UAH, and TRY have a 2% markup.)
Revolut also offers a trading account (Depot) that you can use once you signed up for the checking account. If you would like to know more about trading accounts in Germany and which providers could be an option for you, read our overview of German online broker accounts.
